I was at Kroger early one Sunday morning, a motley mess in an old t-shirt, pants and shoes. My hair was either askew or under a hat. What was left of my makeup was under my eyes. The plan was to sneak in grab milk and a can of refried beans. I was holding a can of fat-free refried beans at arm’s length because I’m old and I forgot my reading glasses. How could they be refried and fat-free? I had to know. “Aren’t you Cindy Wolff? Didn’t you write the pet column for the newspaper?” My first thought was “how was she able to recognize me since I was so unkempt. Next, “why oh why did I have to know how to refry beans that are fat-free? |
It was a happy reunion with the lady. She missed me, I missed her though we’d never met until then. Through the years, I’ve run into loads of people who remember my pet column. All walks of life, income levels, ages and other differences, that share a love of pets.
After I left the paper, I worked on new projects, but always in the back of my mind, I planned to recreate the pet column. I received permission before I left to continue with the name of my column
That said, today Pet Scoop, the blog, goes live. I'm optimistic that we are going to get tougher anti-cruelty laws, more teeth to give Shelby County Environmental Court Judge Larry Potter the power to punish those who abuse or neglect animals in our city. One law I plan to ask all of you to support would ban the chaining of dogs as a means of containment. The cruelty of chaining a dog--even if the chain is 6-feet long--is something we citizens need to be vocal about.
Our new Mayor Jim Strickland has been a long-time supporter of protecting animals in our community. He sponsored or supported several changes in our laws that help animals. And he’s made many promises on the campaign trail. I hope it’s a new era for the animals in our city that suffer horrible lives and deaths. Strickland promises to fix problems at Memphis Animal Services. Let's see.
I hope the community will support these efforts and find other ways to make a difference for animals that aren’t as lucky as yours and mine.
Here are some of the features you’ll find on Pet Scoop.
Welcome back!
Sincerely,
Cindy Wolff, owner of four spoiled, spayed and neutered dogs
